The Jacobs Lake is a beginner trail located north of Escalante in Garfield County. The loop takes you 84 miles from the town of Escalante and back. It takes about six to seven hours of driving to complete.

The terrain is mostly comprised of maintained dirt roads, except for a brief stretch that takes you on the Boulder Swale OHV Trail (the OHV trail is limited to 50″ vehicles so don’t plan on bringing a full size 4×4 on this portion of the loop).

This loop takes you by an astounding amount of mountain lakes and features some spectacular views of the forest and some iconic lookout points including Hell’s Backbone.

Starting the trail from the town of Escalante is the easiest way to begin and stage your vehicles provided they are street legal.

You can also find just about every amenity you need in town including gas, lodging, and food. If you are looking for camping there is also plenty of campsites along the trail including the Posey Lake Campground and the Blue Spruce Campground.

Much of this trail rides through Dixie National Forest. Make sure you’re familiar with the Forest’s rules and regulations about recreation in the area. For more info visit: usda.gov/dixie.

There are many intersections in this loop so make sure to pay attention to trail signage and check your GPS so that you keep going the correct way.

Trailhead:

The Barracks Trail in Kane County is a great trail to explore and familiarize yourself with the Mount Carmel Junction Area trails. This trail takes you about 27 miles through the gorgeous landscape of Southern Utah. We started off just South of the town of Mount Carmel Junction and ended the ride right next to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. While this ride will only take you about 3.5 hours (moving time), there are camping sites along the trail if you wanted to spend more time riding trails in the area. There is a lot of beauty in this area.

You can expect to be driving on mostly dirt roads. Depending on the time of year you ride this trail, you may run into some water and snow.

This trail provides great opportunities to stop, get out, and take in the views.

Arch Canyon might be the most epic trail in the greater Blanding area. It is 23 miles from the bottom to the top and will consume the better part of a day to traverse. Both ways. There are 4 main sets of ruins in Arch Canyon, the first being the fenced ruins which is up Arch Canyon about 1/3 of the way after you turn off of North Comb Wash Road. The ruins are on your right. They are quite close to the road so little hiking is required to get a good look at them. The first set has received a fair amount of damage from people on the hunt for souvenirs and wanting to climb around in them. Please just look. Don’t take anything from the site. The route stops at the convergence of Texas Canyon and the continuation of Arch Canyon. From there, you will have to travel on foot. But it is also there that you will find the arches that the canyon is named for. Foliage at the start of the trip will be mostly sage and an occasional Cottonwood Tree. As you turn off into Arch Canyon proper from the Comb Wash Road the sage will give way to more and more pinion-juniper to eventually be replaced by Ponderosa pines at the mouth of Texas Canyon.

The trail head is 18 miles from Blanding and is a manageable trip in a Street Legal machine. Follow 191 to 95 then 95 west to the trailhead at the Comb Wash Campsite.

Trailhead:

This is one of the few open riding areas in the state. Open riding means no designated trail within Swing Arm City. There is plenty of terrain to test your skills and a great place for young riders to learn and improve their riding abilities. Of course if you are a seasoned expert rider, you will find a lot of challenging obstacles to conquer. The parking areas are enormous and suitable for dozens of RVs at a time. The ground is level and stable and you can easily camp away from the crowd if you like. This is a great place to spend a week or a weekend camping and riding.

The Joshua Tree OHV trails are located in Washington County, Utah at the north end of Gunlock State Park. There is a place to stage at the trailhead, parking in the town of Gunlock or you can ride right out of Gunlock State Park if you are staying there.

This trail is about 55 miles of graded road and some two-track through the desert. We spent 5 hours at an average speed of 10 mph riding. You can easily make this a full day trip taking some of the side roads exploring this remote corner of the state.

There are no services on the trail but you will drive right through St. George and Santa Clara to the trail so stock up on anything you need there.

Riding would be generalized as easy going graded sandy roads with plenty of dust (this is the desert) and you will see Joshua trees.

The Mineral Mountain OHV Loop takes you on winding gravel and dirt roads through the pinyon and juniper covered mountains. There are incredible views of Beaver Dam Wash, Bull Valley and Clover Mountain Range in Nevada. The loop was 55 miles and took us about five hours to complete (riding time).

There are a number of other trails in the area that can take you farther north into the mountains or that drop down onto the desert in the Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area.

The trailhead lies north of Gunlock off of the main route that goes through town or you can reach the trailhead by heading west through Veyo toward Gunlock.

There are lots of options for lodging and amenities in nearby St. George. There are also a few camping spots at Gunlock State Park (get a reservation, they fill fast) if you are looking for a place you can ride from.

American Fork Canyon includes miles of ATV trails, single track trails, and dirt roads. You can spend days exploring trails that lead to Silver Lake, Mineral Basin, Cascade Springs, or ride east to the Midway side which includes Mill Hollow, Snake Creek Canyon, or down to Soldier Hollow. You can park for the day at Tibble Fork Reservoir and ride from there. Most of the dirt roads and ATV trails are moderate, but be careful on areas with steep drop-offs. You do not want to go off the edge. The AF Canyon single track trails are lots of fun for Dirt Bikes!
